This position is full-time and works approximately 40 hours per week.

Department Name/Job Location

This position is in the Department of Pediatrics Hematology/Oncology. The position is located at St. Louis Children's Hospital. This position is for the Medical School Campus.

Essential Functions


Provides comprehensive patient care, consultation, and education to Hematology-Oncology patients and families in the outpatient clinic using a primary nursing framework.


  1. Ongoing responsibility for education of patients and families regarding all aspects of the disease process.
  2. Actively participate in coordination of multi-disciplinary support for patients and their families (including medical-social services, psychology services, supportive care, home care, hospice care, etc.).
  3. Coordinates patient care, orders diagnostic test, labs, conveys finding to physician, coordinates patient appointments and assists with referrals.
  4. Manage outside calls regarding patient care and triage to include calls from families, outside physicians, clinics, out-patient labs, and home care organizations.
  5. Maintain medical records with appropriate and timely documentation of patient information.
  6. Assist with Pre-Certifications from carriers as necessary for procedures, drugs, hospital admissions, or any aspect of treatment.
  7. Assures for patient compliance with study protocols and adherence to treatment regimes. Assists data managers with specimen collections and recording of appropriate data as required.
  8. Acts as liaison and team leader by facilitating communication and coordination of care between patients, families and health team members.
  9. Demonstrates cost-effective work habits by setting priorities and managing supplies (pharmaceutical and clinical) and equipment.
  10. Compliance with environmental and safety regulations, infection control and quality assurance.
  11. Actively participate in developing inservice education for co-workers, staff, and inpatient nurses when appropriate.
  12. Maintains yearly chemotherapy recertification as per divisional policy.
  13. Maintains current CPR.
  14. Other projects and duties as needed under the direction of the Nursing Manager, Clinic Medical Director, or Clinical Administrator.
  15. Coordination of care for pediatric patients in the hematology-oncology outpatient setting. Provide continuation of care as clinical resource and liaison for patients and staff.
  16. Initiate discharge instructions, update medication profiles, review treatment plans and protocols to ensure safe chemotherapy administration with infusion order sets. Ensure scheduling of diagnostic tests, procedures, and precertification of treatment is completed. Participate in research clinical trials.
  17. Provide patient and family education with regard to protocol therapy, medication side effects and disease processes, as well as provide emotional, financial support.
  18. Verification of inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy protocols, transfusions, and medication orders prior to administration.
  19. Coordinate between the various departments to ensure procedures and tests are ordered correctly and in a timely manner ensuring a good patient experience.
  20. Create teaching tools for families and nurses regarding various diagnoses, treatment plans, chemotherapy, etc. as well as provide education for newly diagnosed families.
  21. Serve as a liaison between departments (APC, radiology, nuclear medicine, heart station, etc.) to develop workflow process improvements.
  22. Direct and facilitate morning report and team meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with two years of nursing experience.
  • REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Currently licensed in the state of Illinois and/or Missouri RN licensure, as applicable to work location in accordance with the Compact Act; Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Hematology/Oncology nursing.
  • Skilled in preparation and administration of chemotherapy drugs.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Handles emergency situations calmly and demonstrates professional clinical skills appropriate to the situation.
  • Good organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Salary Range

The hiring range for this position is $53,705 - $96,678 annually.

Applicant Special Instructions

JOB LOCATION/WORKING CONDITIONS: Outpatient pediatric clinic area on the ninth floor of St. Louis Children's Hospital. Moderate to high stress level in a fast-paced, busy area with multiple and simultaneous tasks to perform. Frequent contact with patients, staff, physicians, and administrative personnel. Possible exposure to infectious diseases.
