Job Description

Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals has announced its intent to spin off its Specialty Generics business by the second half of 2019. The spin-off, if completed, will result in the independent company assuming the Mallinckrodt name, and it will be traded on the New York Stock Exchange, with its headquarters in the St. Louis, Mo., area. The name Mallinckrodt – and its historical values of quality, integrity and service – have long been associated with the Specialty Generics business’ St. Louis heritage. With approximately 1,600 employees globally, the newly spun company will include an acetaminophen business, a portfolio of both active pharmaceutical ingredients and generic finished dose forms of controlled substances and other drugs, a niche specialty generics development portfolio, a portfolio of third-party promoted and non-promoted branded drugs, and a strong U.S. manufacturing footprint.

Summary

The Chief Communications Officer will report to the President, Specialty Generics, and lead the development, implementation and execution of external and internal strategies and messaging to communicate the Mallinckrodt mission and vision, while building a positive relationship with key external stakeholders, including investors. Collaborate with and advise executive team, senior leaders and functional groups to ensure external corporate messaging is consistent and supports the mission. Maintain expert knowledge of the competitive landscape. Manage high-profile communications issues and crises.

This individual will articulate the company’s goals, objectives and position on various topics; create a process and framework of aligned messaging to assure that consistent messages are conveyed to external and internal audiences; and will ensure that the executive and senior leadership team has the necessary support and consistent messaging required to articulate company actions for their functions. This individual will have client-based relationships with executive members as well as business/functional group leaders.

This individual will also manage philanthropy, community relations and work with content experts in the business to provide content for Mallinckrodt’s public policy positions related to various areas of this business.

Essential Functions

  • Provide strategic counsel on business-related efforts and initiatives.

  • Develop and implement strategies and messaging that resonate with customers, the media and investors to promote business achievements, new products, community involvement and philanthropic activities. Direct media relations activity to ensure strategies are appropriately executed.

  • Work with Senior Management to identify key issues and communication objectives.

  • Identify and anticipate issues and work with appropriate functions to counsel management on reputation/business impact and influence business decision making process.

  • Set metrics to measure effectiveness of internal and external communication efforts.

  • Oversee development of messages, press materials and other communications tools. Develop strategic communications and competitive positioning for the business, with particular emphasis on competitive environment and marketplace.

  • Coach senior leadership on delivery of key messages.

  • Develop and execute employee communication strategies and materials across multiple channels to keep employees at all levels informed, engaged, aligned, connected and motivated.

  • Take ownership of the company intranet and make use of all relevant channels, including email, video, events and social media to connect large constituencies spread across multiple business units and locations.

  • Maintain ability to hold an independent perspective and offer differing options, when appropriate.

  • Drive relationship-building and engagement with media/influencers to generate frequent, positive coverage.

  • Support senior leaders with speaking engagements.

  • Handle highly sensitive, confidential corporate communications, initiatives and projects and advise senior management on associated communication strategies and issues. Lead and manage communication strategy and execution during crises.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to identify key messages and ensure accurate information is reflected in external corporate communications.

  • Will also attend Board meetings as needed.

Minimum Requirements

Education / Experience / Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or a related field is required. Advanced degree is preferred.

  • At least 12-15 years’ experience required in a corporate communications or related role.

  • Possess exceptional writing, editing, presentation and proofreading abilities.

  • Bring demonstrated track record of success developing and implementing impactful communication programs that drive engagement.

  • Demonstrate exceptional proactive internal client service and ability to exert influence on peers and superiors to drive projects to successful completion.

  • Has strong project management ability to organize complex cross functional projects and manage multiple different projects toward timely, successful, simultaneous completion.

  • Demonstrate high level of strategic focus and overall business knowledge and perspective.

  • Executive presence and comfort in all interactions with employees, senior-level management and critical external stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to lead through influence, flexibility and diplomacy.

Competencies:

  • Excellent written, presentation and oral communication skills with strong business acumen.

  • Strong business partnering skills with other functional areas, i.e. HR, Finance. Ability to bring together a variety of different viewpoints and work towards a common approach.

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office products (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Organizational Relationship/Scope:

Reporting to the President, Specialty Generics, this position will collaborate closely with key stakeholders across Mallinckrodt, including the Executive team. Ability to travel both domestically and internationally is required.
