Saint Louis Zoo Herpetarium Keeper in Saint Louis, Missouri
Responsibilities: Responsible for the care of a large, diverse collection of reptiles and amphibians. Major tasks include cleaning and maintaining exhibits, off-exhibit enclosures and service areas; feeding and watering specimens; working with dangerous animals including venomous snakes, large constrictors and crocodilians; water quality testing; aquatic and HVAC system maintenance; observing specimens; maintaining accurate and detailed records; interacting with and educating the public; contributing to conservation breeding projects; assisting support staff; and completing additional assigned projects.
Qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree in Biology/Zoology and previous keeper experience working with reptiles and amphibians. Strong knowledge/background in herpetology/herpetoculture and experience working with venomous snakes and aquatic systems preferred. Good writing and speaking skills and the ability to work alone and as part of a team are required. Must have the physical ability to perform required duties as assigned including standing for long periods of time, lifting (which may include up to 40-50 lbs.), bending and working in rooms of varied temperature (56–85° F). Adherence to safety practices and a good understanding of departmental and zoo wide safety procedures is expected. Good keeper safety record required. Scuba and/or dive certification a plus. Priority will be given to current Saint Louis Zoo Animal Division employees. All successful candidates for this position will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test.
