Burns & McDonnell Staff Electrical Engineer (Pipeline Facility Instrumentation) in Kansas City, Missouri


Job Profile

Primary responsibilities include electrical and instrumentation design for pipelines and related facilities. Responsibilities include:

  • Under general supervision, perform and/or coordinate the electrical and instrumentation engineering and design execution from multiple offices for a project, incorporating schedules, budgets and project criteria into design and deliverables to meet project goals.

  • Assist the Lead Engineer, as requested, in areas of scheduling, estimating, progress reporting, meetings, procurement activities, etc.

  • Develop and prepare project deliverables; including design concepts through detailed design, procurement and construction.

  • Effectively coordinate with clients’ project management and engineering personnel.

  • Lead development of logic diagram, cause & effects, control narratives and control system.

  • Design PLC, BMS, RTU, SCADA, Instrument Index, I/O List, electrical equipment, and instruments specifications of Pipeline related facilities.

  • Lead development of one-line, three-lines, schematics diagrams, wiring diagrams, AC and DC Power system.

  • Design grounding, ground grid, control buildings, station layouts, lighting, and perform basic calculation.

  • Participate in development of P&IDs, equipment and instrument procurement packages.

  • Participate in the continual improvement of internal departmental engineering standards and procedures.

  • Provide technical sale support and assist on new project proposals, as requested.

  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from ABET accredited program

  • Minimum 3 years experiences in Electrical, Instrumentation and Control engineering (completion of master’s degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Knowledge of principles and experience in both electrical and instrumentation & control engineering in Natural Gas Metering & Regulating Stations, Compressor Stations, Storage Facilities, Terminal and Pipeline facilities, Refineries, Chemical or Food Processing facilities.

  • Ability to perform risk management review (HAZOP, SIL)

  • Experience with Safety Instrumented System (SIS), Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF), various control and safety systems such as DCS, BMS, PLC, RTU, SCADA.

  • Advanced knowledge of industrial standards and code such as AGA, API, PIP, ISO, NFPA, NEC, IEEE

  • Strong leadership skills with ability to resolve issues in team environment

  • Successful completion of FE/EIT strongly preferred.
